The Rouffaer constiutes the western arm of the large valley also containing the middle to upper Mamberamo River (eastern arm of valley) in north central Irian Jaya. The Rouffaer contains relatively few oxbow lakes as compared to the middle Mamberamo. The entire river valley is a vast wetland with relatively few inhabitats. However the crocodile trade has brought many outboard motors to the region. |

As of 1993 the road from Jayapura has not reached the Mamberamo River. Several small settlements (Kaiy, Bareri, Tayai) have airstrips which can be reached from Jayapura by missionary aircraft (Cessnas). Kecamatan Dabra on the middle Mamberamo (also with airstrip) has many motorized canoes. The rapids at Kwerba on the lower to Middle Mamberamo (below the confluence with the Rouffaer) are an effective obstacle to shipping, keeping all but the bravest small boat captains from entering the region. |
