  Site Description
The Kayan river reaches the sea through this large delta comprising numerous winding channels separated by lowlying islands of alluvium, covered for the most part by tidal swamp. This area is rich in its variety of typical tidal swamp and estuarine habitats. The area was proposed as nature reserve in 1977, but an active concession for making chipboard has already damaged much of the area. In 1981 MacKinnon considered it already too late to establish it Nypa fruticans stands. Principal vegetation: Extensive areas of Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Avicennia marina and Sonneratia alba. The mangrove date palm Phoenix paludosa is relatively common in Nypa fruticans stands.
