  Site Description
Lake Sentani is a 24 kilometre-long and generally narrow (max. width 12 km) lake located some 10 kilometres west of Jayapura, the capital city of Irian Jaya Province. It covers a total area of about 9,360 hectares (Giesen, 1994) and is located about 6 kilometres from the sea (Yotefa Bay). It's blue-green waters are dotted with at least 16 small islands, and it is surrounded by hills of 200-300 metres height that are largely deforested and now covered with alang-alang (imperata cylindrica) vegetation. About 35 small rivers flow into the lake, and there is one natural outlet river in the south-eastern tip, the Jafuri river, which has an average annual debit of 12.5m3/s. Demographics: The Lake Sentani catchment includes (part of) 12 subdistricts (kecamatan), with a population density ranging from 14-148 persons per kmĀ², averaging at 53 (1983; PSL-UNCEN 1984). Numerous small villages are scattered around the lake and on the various small islands. All villages are Irianese, Christian and generally consisting of houses on stilts, located along the waterfronts. People subsist on fishing, sago, pig raising, and some minor vegetables grown in small homelots. Villages are generally surprisingly clean, with little refuse and no nasty smells. People tend to keep the waters around their houses clean, and attemp to keep them clear of waterhyacinth. An important hygienic aspect here is that human and pig wastes are deposited on the hills rather than in the waters (Giesen, 1997).
