Site Description

A tiny offshore coral island with beach vegetation. It is known to be of importance to birds and has nesting beaches and feeding areas for turtles.
A reef flat extends to 200 m off the island at the south-east side of the island. During the 1997 survey (WIBOWO, 1997), the coral reef condition is in good condition with live coral cover estimates at 70-90%. No indication of coral bombing occur.

Birah-birahan island is located about 15 km off the Manubar gulf, at the south coast of Sangkulirang peninsula, East Kalimantan.
To get to the island, one can travel from Samarinda to Sangkulirang by boat or by car (8 hours distance). From Sangkulirang, one can use boat to get to the island (1 hour distance). |
