Site Description

The area is the huge delta of the Mahakam river and includes 20,000 ha of mangrove forest and 30,000 ha of freshwater swamp forest. All the dry areas are cleared by uncontrolled agriculture.
Giesen (1996) reports that the mangrove area is heavily disturbed, consisting mainly of nipah palm swamps and tambak fishponds instead of mangrove trees. |
