  Site Description
The site is an estuarine habitat. The main river is Paloh river which has a length of about 10 km, that runs south-west direction. The water of Paloh river originally comes from three main rivers, Cermai, Bemban, and Asuansang rivers. Paloh is surrounded by hilly area, including Cermai, Asuansang, Melintang, and Belautunggal mountains. The flat coastal and estuarine area is mainly vegetated by mangrove forests, nypa swamp forest, and peat swamp forest. Sandy beaches occur along the coastline of Paloh (30-50 m-wide). Rocky shores occur at Tanjung Api and Tanjung Munggu Resak. The sandy beaches are habitats for turtle nesting site. Five species are believed to occur : The Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochyelys imbricata), Olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivaceae), Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), and the Green turtle (Chelonia mydas). FURKON (1997 pers comm, in WIBOWO 1997) informed that the freshwater river terrapin/Tutong (Batagur baska) often uses the sandy beaches as nesting site as well. The sandy beaches covers a coastal stretch of about 15 km. The vegetation consists of dry-beach forest and mangrove swamp, with some Nypa along the Belacan river. Some of the mangrove forests are highly disturbed by logging activities. Principal vegetation: Mangal communities, including Avicennia, Rhizophora, Bruguiera, Sonneratia and Nypa. Casuarina marina stands occur on the beach.
