Site Description

Sangkulirang lies at one of the deltas at the river mouth of Karangan river, which forms the Sangkulirang bay. Most of the area is vegetated with mangrove forest, especially at Kepulauan Seribu. Mangrove vegetation is dominated with Rhizophora and Avicennia. At the mouth of the estuary, the mangrove forest becomes less, as more opened areas occur. Upstream of Sangkulirang river, nypa vegetation occur up to 30 km of Sangkulirang island.
Upstream of Sangkulirang river, two main rivers occur: the Karangan and Baai rivers. These rivers orignite from karst area as their cathcments. Riparian forest occur along these rivers, although at some parts clearings occur.
The nearest karst area is at Pengadan, some 40 km upstream of Baai river. The scenery is spectacular, with karst towers where sheer-sided limestone cliffs rise for several hundred metres above the surrounding plains.
At the mouth of Sangkulirang bay, two small coral island occur, the Miang Besar and Miang kecil islands. Coral reef condition at these two islands are in good condition, particularly at the reef slope. |

Sangkulirang is located at the south coast of Sambaliung Mountains East Kalimantan.
To reach Sangkulirang, one can travel by car from Samarinda (8 hours distance), or by boat from Bontang. |
