  Site Description  
  A flat rich lowland forest with nearly one half consisting of (43,000 ha of mangrove forest and 100 ha of beach forest. The other pert of the area consists of moist lowland Dipterocarp forest and peat swamps. The area is known to be of exceptional floral richness as well as being important turtle nesting beaches. The water depth in the peat swamps is 50cm in the wet season and 10-20cm in the dry season. A major river in the area is the Sambas river including tributaries. Sungai Sambas is 500-1,000m wide. During the rainy season it has a depth of 4-9m, during the dry season 3-6m. The island tidal variation (noticable up to 30km up stream) is 0.5m. Other features of this river are its muddy bottom, slow current and rather steep banks. Principal vegetation: Mangrove, peatswamp and freshwater swamp forest: Ramin (Gonystylus bancanus), Mentiba (Dactyloclados stenostachys), Terentang (Campnosperma auriculata), Resak (Vatica oblongifolia) and Meranti (Shorea spp.). The undergrowt consists of Pandanus and palmae species.
