  Site Description
The 59,000 ha lake is one of the largest lakes in Sulawesi. It is an aesthetically pleasing area surrounded by forested hills. The protected area contains 6,000 ha of lowland forest on ultra basic rock. There are several small villages around the lake. The lake is one of the magnificient lakes in Indonesia, last in te chain of Matano-Mahalona-Towuti.Its maximum depth is some 200 metres, but Lehmusluto and Machmub (1995) found only 82 metres in the north-western basin, because the location of the greatest depth is not well documented. The lake flows through the Larona and Malili rivers to the Bone Bay. It was weakly stratified (RTR 39.8). It was indicated that the lake was homotherm. Water quality is good and the lake is considered oligotrophic. La Rona river which flows out of lake produces 165 MW of hydroelectricity used mainly for producing nickel by IN.
