Site Description |
|
|
A lake system containing three large lakes (Matana, Mahalona and Towuti) and two much smaller lakes (Masapi and Wawantoa). The degree of endemism is high and moreover of an unusual kind: of the 60 species of copepods, prawns, molluscs and fish endemic to Sulawesi found in the system only one (a prawn) is shared by all five lakes. Towuti has 26 endemic fish species, Mahalona 5 and Wawontona 4. Lake Matana has on its southern shore extensive nickel mines and hydro-power sites. |
