  Site Description
Candi Dasa is a coastal area with a narrow sand beach with palm trees. The coastal waters is relatively shallow with coral reef occurs in the area, protecting the beach from exessive abrasion. The depth of the waters of the inner reef flats varies between 1 to 5 metres. During the low tide some part of the reef flat emerge, and during high tide, shallow lagoons occur, providing habitats for a number of fishes and other biotas. Fringing reef occur along the coast of Candi Dasa. The reef flat occur about 200 metres from the beach, and betwen ther reef flat and the beach, shallow lagoon occur. At the inner flat and the lagoon, corals grow in association with seagrass bed in some areas. A coral reef survey carried out by Wibowo (1996), found that the coral cover of the area is betwen 11-30%. Most corals have been damaged, which according to Suryadiputra (pers.comm) during the 1970s to eary 1980s coral mining occured intensively in the area. Most corals in Candi Dasa coastal waters are dominated with Acropora (18-31% of coral cover). Shallow lagoons of the inner reef flat provides calm waters which is also habitat for many reef fish species. There area at least 81 species found in the area (Wibowo, 1996). Most of the fishes are sedentary species such as damshelfish (Pomacentridae), butterflyfish (Chaetodontidae), and wrasses (Labridae). A colony of green chromis (Chromis cinerascens) is commonly found in the area. Seagrass beds occur in the shallow waters adjacent to the reef. They are commonly found in the area where sand dominates the substrate or the area where the reef has already damaged.
