A mountain area with several volcanos and a large crater lake (Danau Batur). Lake Batur is the largest and deepest convined lake in Bali, and its basin is a caldera. It is situated next to the volcano Gunung Batur. Most recent eruption happened in 1963. There is a small scale agriculture around the lake, and an increasing number of guest ouse are being built. The lake is also for fisheries. The volcano is a favored hiking area, and on the western shore there is the oldest village in ali, trunyan. By now, there are no major man-caused threats to the lake. According to Schmitz (1994) lake Batur is both thermo and chemo stratified, although his studies were only to the depth of 50 metres. The lake is highly saline (Lehmusluoto and Machbub, 1995). |
