Site Description
The peatswamps consist of 3 separate peatdomes that probably originated as topogenous peat, formed in perennially wet detressions between the levees of the Musi, Lematang and Bungin rivers - Peat depth averages about 4m, and is often over 6m. The peatswamps (as surveyed by Giesen, 1990) consist of 3 separate peat domes, which will be referred to (from east to west) as the Eastern Lematang Peatswamp, the Western Lematang Peatswamp and the Bungin Peatswamp. Originally all 3 sites were vegetated with tall mixed peatswamp forest, but logging and fires have altered this to the point that only degenerated and secondary forest remains. |

The Lematang River peatswamps lie south of the Musi River, about 50 kilometers west of Palembang in South Sumatra Province and straddle the river whose name they bear. PHPA is not represented in the area, the nearest office being that of the Kayu km 6, PO Box 288, tel (410948). The Balais office is in Tanjung Karang, Lampung Province.
The peatswamps lie in two regencies: Kabupaten Musi-Banyiasin, where the Bungin Peatswamp and the northern-most five kilometre band of both Eastern and Western Lematang Peatswamps are found, and Kabupaten Muara Enim, where the remaining areas of the Eastern and Western Lematang Peatswamps are located. |
