  Site Description
A large bay with eight islands: Pulau Besar, Pomana Besar, Pomana Kecil, Gosong Bone Atoll, Dambilah, Babi, Prarmahan, and Kondo islands. The coastal area is fringed by mangrove forests and coral reefs and sandy beaches (with dry beach forest). The landscape is beautiful and has high recreational value. Principal vegetation: Rhizophora sp., Sonneratia alba, Avicennia sp., Bruguiera sp. Teluk Maumere is the center for diving activity in east Flores. At least there are 13 dive sites in this Maumere Bay. The reefs of Maumere Bay were widely acknowledged to be among the finest in Asia. The major reefs occur around Pomana Besar island, and Damilahan island. The reefs are known to be rich in reef fish species. In December 1992, the seaside town of 40,000 people was smashed by a powerful earthquake, and a huge tidal wave (estimated to be over 10 m tall), and causing massive loss of life.
