  Site Description
The Tanimbar Islands form the second largest archipelago in south-east Molucca. The largest island is Yamdena, which is surrounded by dozens of smaller ones. At the western coastline of Yamdena there are beach heads fringed by tidal mudflats. Inland there are seasonal swamps. Going further inland, the land remains relatively flat for about 20km and then rises gently for another 20km to form a row of hills. The area contains a delta at the west coast. The forest in the central part of Yamdena is virtually untouched and has great conservation value as one of the few remaining areas of lowland decidous forest in Indonesia. In the delta of Wai Ranarmoje there are extensive mangrove swamps, reaching up to 10km inland. Nypa and Oncosperma characterize the transition zone to freshwater conditions. Principal vegetation: Mangal communities: Aegiceras corniculatum, Bruguiera, Ceriops, Avicennia, Rhizophora, Nypa fruticans. Freshwater swamps: Oncosperma sp. The surrounding islands, particularly Angwarmase Island, is fringed with sandy beaches and coral reefs. PHPA/Birdlife International (1993) calculated that the proposed Ranarmoye Wildlife Reserve contains 1,865 ha of swamp forest, 6,529 ha mangrove forest, and 12,236 ha coral reefs.
  Site Location
